US President Joe Biden stated that US soldiers will defend Taiwan if China attacks it.

Answering a question about whether the US forces will defend the island, the American president during an interview for the "60 Minutes" program broadcast last night on CBS television, answered: "Yes, if there is an unprecedented attack."

Meanwhile, when asked what Chinese President Xi should know about your stance on Taiwan, Biden said: "We stand by what we signed a long time ago. We are committed to the one-China policy and do not encourage or lead Taiwan to independence. Independence is the decision of the Taiwanese themselves."

Is "strategic ambiguity" being abandoned?

Biden's words were the clearest statement contradicting Washington's policy of "strategic ambiguity" so far on the Taiwan issue.

Washington, which adopts the "One China" policy and recognizes the Beijing administration as the legitimate government of all of China, pledged in the Taiwan Relations Act of 1979 to support the island in having the military capacity for self-defense and oppose actions to unilaterally changed the status quo in the region.

However, these commitments do not impose an obligation on the US to directly defend Taiwan militarily. This policy has been called "strategic ambiguity", with Washington refraining from official statements that the US military will actively defend Taiwan.

After the interview, the producers of the program included a statement from the White House, which emphasized that the US policy towards Taiwan has not changed and repeated the rhetoric of strategic ambiguity. "The US cannot officially say that the US military will defend Taiwan."

President Joe Biden made a similar statement during his visit to Japan in May, when a reporter asked, "Will the U.S. defend Taiwan militarily in the event of a Chinese invasion?" he replied, "Yes, that is our commitment."

China responds to Biden with anger

China has toughened its language towards Washington after President Biden's statements on the Taiwan issue in an interview on Sunday night.

Through the spokesperson of the Foreign Ministry, Beijing has protested against Biden's statements.

"The US side's statements seriously violate the 'One China' principle and the provisions of the three China-US joint communiqués, seriously violate the US's important commitment not to support Taiwan independence, and send a false signal to pro-independence separatist forces on the island,” he said.

Pelosi's visit and rising tensions

US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan on August 2-3 raised tensions significantly. Before the visit, Beijing's spokesmen had warned that if Pelosi's visit were to take place, they would take strong countermeasures, including a "military response."

While Pelosi was the first House Speaker to visit the island in 25 years, which is in a sovereignty dispute with China, the visit drew a backlash from China, which views the island as part of its territory.

After the visit, the Chinese military began military exercises around Taiwan, with the exercises lasting 7 days creating a de facto blockade around the island. During exercises using live weapons and ammunition, guided missiles launched by China fell into the waters near Taiwan.

The military spokesman announced that the drills ended on August 10, but stated that military patrol activity in the Taiwan Strait will continue.
