The outgoing Prime Minister of Montenegro, Dritan Abazovic, confirmed today in Washington that an agreement has been reached in principle to present the name of Miodrag Lekic, of the Demos party, to the president to form the new government, but he did not give any other details.

"We have reached an agreement, let's call it declared, that we have a majority for the new government", he said while speaking at the Atlantic Council in Washington where he is visiting.

An adviser to Mr. Abazovic clarified to VOA that the name of the candidate for the next prime minister was submitted after the deadline was the end of today, but not everything has been decided yet, so nothing is final yet. According to him, the Ura Party supported the granting of the mandate to Mr. Lekić, but did not sign it because it requires the entire agreement and then sign it.

The parliamentary majority resulting from the 2020 elections assessed today in a conference with journalists that the agreement has been reached for the new representative of the government of Montenegro.

One of the representatives of the Democratic Front coalition, Andrija Mandiq, announced that the winning parties of the 2020 elections have agreed that the chairman of Demos, former diplomat Lekiq, will be in charge of forming the new government.

Mr. Mandiq, after a meeting attended by representatives of the Democratic Front, Democrats, URA and other smaller parties that are in coalition with them, announced that the old parliamentary majority agreed on the formation of a new government.

Mandiq also said that the next government will be created on the basis of equality, according to which half of its members will be from the ranks of URA, the other half will be ministers from other parties and the candidate for mandate, Miodrag Lekiq. , there will be a "golden vote".

The United States has been told that it does not see the Democratic Front as a partner because it does not support European values. This party was also named in the latest US report on Russian funding of foreign political parties. Asked about Western concerns about pro-Russian forces, Mr. Abazovic assured Washington that there is no possibility of doing anything wrong in foreign policy, but on the other hand, the Democratic Front is involved in talks on the next government.

Dritan Abazovic's government fell on August 20 after parliament voted in favor of a no-confidence motion against it, which was taken after the cabinet voted in favor of the basic agreement with the Serbian Orthodox Church.

The parties that requested the government's vote of confidence said they took the initiative because of the detention of Montenegro on its way to the European Union and the increase of inter-ethnic tensions in the country. They said that instead of following the European path, the government is conducting political experiments.

Prime Minister Abazovic said that the demand for the overthrow of the government had nothing to do with European processes, but with the agreement his government reached with the Serbian Orthodox Church.

The agreement with the Serbian Orthodox Church caused clashes within the ruling coalition from the start. A part of the governing parties emphasized that the agreement is against the national interests of Montenegro and is not in accordance with the Montenegrin constitution and laws./VOA
