A strong earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.6, has been recorded in Mexico, with the epicenter in Coalcomán, shaking buildings and sending residents of the capital to the streets.

There were no immediate reports of damage from the earthquake which struck at 13:05 local time and struck near the town of La Placita de Morelos in the state of Michoacán at a depth of 15 km.

The US Tsunami Warning System has placed a state of alert off the coast of Michoacan.
