New online authorization system postponed after chaos at EU borders!

The European Union is expected to postpone the launch of a new online system for prior authorization of travelers from non-EU countries until next year, following problems encountered with the implementation of another electronic border control system.

The ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System), similar to the American ESTA model, will affect around 1.4 billion travelers who can currently enter the Schengen area without a visa, including citizens of the United Kingdom and the United States.

Under the new rules, travelers will have to register online before traveling, pay a fee of 20 euros, and undergo security checks before receiving authorization for entry.

The decision to postpone ETIAS is related to technical difficulties and delays in the implementation of the EU's other border system, the EES (Entry/Exit System), which requires the registration of fingerprints and facial images for citizens outside the European Union.

Problems with the EES have caused long queues at some airports and border crossings, raising concerns from the aviation industry about difficulties during the summer travel season.

The European agency EU-Lisa, responsible for implementing ETIAS, has admitted that launching the system by the end of this year, as originally planned, no longer seems feasible.

The EU-LISA Steering Board discussed the possibility of extending the deadline in June and is expected to return to this issue in the coming months to determine a new calendar.

An official briefed on the process said that there are still technical problems with the system and that the priority should be to stabilize the EES before introducing another procedure that could further increase delays at the border.

The European Commission stated that preparations for the launch of ETIAS continue, but stressed that for large technological systems, numerous factors must be taken into account before their activation.

The EES system was initially planned to enter into force in 2022, but has been postponed several times due to procurement problems, technical issues and different paces of preparation in member states.

Some EU officials estimate that the ETIAS delay could be relatively short, while others consider its launch within this year unlikely.
