US President Donald Trump has held a private phone call with Vladimir Putin, which according to the Russian side lasted about an hour and a half. This is the fourth communication between the two leaders this year.

On the Russian side, Kremlin foreign policy advisor Yuri Ushakov described the conversation as "very constructive," noting that it began with Putin's congratulations to Trump and the American people on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of US independence. According to him, "Russia's contribution to the formation of the American state" and the importance of respecting our shared history were also mentioned.

Ushakov also said the two sides had talked about the war in Ukraine, where Trump has confirmed the commitment of his mediators, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, to help find a solution.

Moscow, for its part, has reiterated the position that any agreement must take into account its "principled positions," implying that it seeks control over Donbas.

According to the Kremlin's narrative, Russian forces are advancing on the front and taking control of new areas in the Donetsk region, which Kiev disputes, saying that fighting continues and attacks are being repelled.

The conversation between Trump and Putin comes at a sensitive diplomatic moment, just before the NATO summit in Ankara, where important discussions are expected about the war in Ukraine and support for Kiev.

Russian media have portrayed the call as an important political signal, suggesting that the US may not fully oppose its approach to the conflict. Meanwhile, critical voices within Russia, including former President Dmitry Medvedev, have stressed that the US should not make decisions on behalf of other countries.

According to the Corriere della Sera analysis, Moscow still sees the US as a decisive factor in the developments of the war in Ukraine, especially on the eve of the NATO summit.
