Thousands of additional deaths have been recorded across Europe following last week's heatwave, particularly among the elderly.

Paris and other European cities experienced temperatures of up to and above 40°C last week.

Over 3,700 additional deaths were recorded in France, Belgium and the Netherlands alone as a result of the June heatwave, which pushed temperatures above 40°C.

Experts have stated that this heatwave, which lasted from approximately June 20 to 28, was the most severe ever recorded in Europe.

Authorities have warned that the figures are preliminary and could rise. France recorded 2,025 excess deaths, according to Health Minister Stéphanie Rist, or 29.1% more than the usual level.

Although the majority of victims were people over 65, the French Institute of Public Health also reported a significant increase in deaths in the 45-64 age group.

Deaths in homes increased by over 90% during the period June 22-28, compared to the previous week, while deaths in nursing homes and health institutions also increased.

“The mortality rate could increase even more than these initial figures suggest,” the French public health authority warned. Belgium also recorded more than 1,200 additional deaths between June 18 and 29, or about 39% more than the normal rate. “Such a mortality rate during a heat wave is unprecedented in our country,” the ministry said in a statement, noting that Belgium experienced “seven tropical days with temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius, as well as exceptionally warm nights.

Temperature records were also set in Germany, Poland, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Hungary , while the United Kingdom and Switzerland recorded their highest June temperatures.
