Russia is executing soldiers who disobey orders in a new military offensive in eastern Ukraine, despite facing "huge" losses of military personnel and equipment, the White House said Thursday.

" We have information that the Russian military is executing soldiers who are refusing to comply with orders ," National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said.

" We have information that Russian commanders are threatening to execute all units if they withdraw from the fighting ," he added.

"This thing is reprehensible."

Kirby did not elaborate when asked about the executions, or how the US obtained the information.

Russia is increasing the scale of attacks in the town of Avdivka in eastern Ukraine and in the northeastern city of Kupiansk, with the aim of changing the front line before the winter season.

Moscow has suffered "significant losses" in the offensive, including at least 125 weapons, and "thousands" of casualties, Kirby said.

"The Russian military appears to be using what we call human wave tactics. It is no surprise that the Russian forces are suffering from a lack of will."

The war in Ukraine started on February 24, 2022. Russian President Vladimir Putin calls the war a "special military operation" to demilitarize Ukraine.

The West has responded to Russia, hitting the economy of this country with harsh sanctions. As a result of the war, thousands of people have died and millions more have been displaced from their homes.
