BBC: Why does Israel want a ground invasion of Gaza to appear imminent?

The Israeli army carried out an overnight operation in Gaza, using tanks. This is not a ground invasion, but the military says it is preparing for other phases

This is exactly the kind of thing you'd expect before a ground invasion - troops looking to find and destroy defenses on the ground.

Photos show tanks and armored bulldozers moving in. The Israeli statement alludes to fighting on the ground, although the photographs do not show this.

The statement states that the troops left at the end of the action.

But it's hard to say whether this gives us much more clues about when a ground operation will occur.

The language used by the Israeli military is stronger than for previous raids, saying this was 'part of preparations for the next stages of the fight'.

But the narrative struggle is also critical. Israel wants to continue to think that an incursion is inevitable for three reasons:

- To stop the fall of morale to the ground.

-For internal consumption, to show that the answer is coming, and;

-To keep pressure on Hamas, especially for hostage negotiations.
