House lawmakers on Wednesday elected Republican Mike Johnson, a conservative lawmaker with little leadership experience, as speaker of the House. This development follows a tumultuous three-week period for the election of a new leader due to divisions among Republicans. The works of the chamber were blocked while the country has to deal with important issues such as the crisis in the Middle East or the disagreements over the budget, which again threaten the closure of the government.
By a vote of 220 to 209, Johnson, 51, was elected chairman, filling the vacancy created by the ouster of Republican Rep. Kevin McCarthy on Oct. 3 at the initiative of a group of hardline Republican lawmakers. Their anger was fueled by a deal Mr. McCarthy struck with Democratic lawmakers that averted a government shutdown.
Over the past three weeks, Republican lawmakers, who enjoy a fragile majority in the House of Representatives, considered and rejected three candidates before voting for Republican Speaker Johnson, a lawyer by profession from Louisiana who is backed by former President Donald Trump. who is known for pushing conservative policies such as the issue of prayer in schools.
Mr. Johnson was elected as a lawmaker for the first time in 2016 and will be the most inexperienced speaker in decades to ever lead the House of Representatives. He is known as the author of unsuccessful attempts by 126 Republican lawmakers of the House of Representatives to overturn the result of the 2020 election, in states where Mr. Trump had lost.
Mr. Johnson declined to answer a reporter's question about the issue shortly after he was named the Republican presidential nominee on Tuesday night.
In a letter to colleagues, Mr Johnson vowed to push ahead with the budget bill and ensure the US government does not shut down, with the deadline set to expire on November 17.
He also has to deal with Democratic President Joe Biden's request for $106 billion in aid to Israel, Ukraine and US border security. Although Republicans generally support financial aid to Israel and the US border, they are divided on aid to Ukraine.
Mr. Johnson is best known as a defender of conservative social attitudes.
He has supported legislation banning gender reassignment surgeries and hormone treatments for transgender teenagers. He also opposes face coverings on airplanes and supports policies that tighten immigration and abortion.
As speaker, Mr. Johnson will face the same challenges as his predecessor, Mr. McCarthy, as well as the demands of a more radical group of lawmakers in the face of the fact that with a Democratic-controlled Senate and a Democratic president, no law can is approved without the support of both parties.
