The Biden administration is considering admitting some Palestinians as refugees to the U.S., a move that would provide a permanent safe haven for some fleeing war-torn Gaza, according to federal government documents obtained by CBS Nea.

In recent weeks, according to the documents, senior officials in several US states have discussed the practicality of various options for housing Palestinians from Gaza who have close family members who are US citizens or permanent residents.

One of those proposals involves using the decades-old United States Refugee Admissions Program to welcome Palestinians who have managed to flee Gaza and enter neighboring Egypt, according to interagency planning documents.

Senior US officials have also discussed removing other Palestinians from Gaza and processing them as refugees if they have relatives in the US, the documents show. Implementation of these plans would require coordination with Egypt, which has so far refused to welcome large numbers of people from Gaza.

Those who pass a series of thorough, medical and security checks will be eligible to fly to the US with refugee status, which offers recipients permanent residency, resettlement benefits such as housing assistance and an approach to US citizenship.

While the eligible population is expected to be relatively small, the plans being discussed by US officials could provide a lifeline for some Palestinians fleeing the Israel-Hamas war, which local public health authorities say has claimed the lives of more more than 34,000 people and displaced hundreds of thousands of civilians.
