Scholz harshly attacks Putin before the UN
Scholz speaking at the United Nations

It was German Chancellor Scholz's first speech before the United Nations. A scathing speech against Putin, whom he accused of pure imperialism. Scholz spoke about the reform of the Security Council.

In his first speech before the United Nations, German Chancellor Oaf Scholz made serious accusations against Russian President Vladimir Putin. Referring to Russia's war of aggression in Ukraine, Scholz said before the 77th session of the UN General Assembly in New York that "he is not destroying (…) only Ukraine, he is also destroying his country." Putin conducts this war of conquest with the sole purpose of subduing Ukraine. Self-determination and political independence do not play a role for him. There is only one word for this: "This is pure imperialism", Scholz said in New York, and emphasized once again the support of the UN member Ukraine "with all the power, financially, economically, humanitarianly and with weapons .

"Borders are not moved by force"

The chancellor asked the community of states to commit to the basic objectives and principles of the UN. You should not stand idly by when a fully armed nuclear superpower, apart from this founding member of the UN and permanent member of the Security Council, seeks to move the borders by force. Scholz criticized the "new fragmentarism" of the world. New wars and conflicts have been created. Major global crises are looming before us, intertwining and intensifying.”

In his speech, Chancellor Scholz recalled that UN member states are responsible for the protection of human rights. Scholz called on the Chinese government to implement the recommendations of former UN human rights commissioner Michelle Bachelet on the situation of the Uyghur Muslim minority in Xinjiang. Beijing denies the accusation that hundreds of thousands of people are imprisoned in re-education camps in this province. Regarding the respect of human rights, Scholz also mentions countries such as Afghanistan, North Korea, Syria, Iran and Belarus.

In addition, the German chancellor requested the reform of the Security Council and a permanent place for Germany in the highest instance of the UN. "Germany is ready to take on more responsibility, both as a permanent member and as a non-permanent country in 1927/28." The Federal Republic of Germany is the second largest funder of the UN system, Scholz emphasized.
