The Russian state channel, Russia Today (RT), announced on Tuesday that it has started broadcasting the program online in Serbian.

The news was confirmed on Twitter by the editor-in-chief of RT, Margarita Simonyan, with the message: "We started RT in the Balkans, because Kosovo is Serbia."

In a statement published on RT's Russian-language website, the broadcast of the Serbian-language TV program will begin in 2024.

"Surely, nowhere in the world have we been welcomed as much as here. I want to address the beloved Serbs in their own language: 'Brothers, watch RT,'" Simonyan said in an official announcement by Russian state television.

The statement of the editor-in-chief of the Serbian program, Ellena Millincic, was also quoted, who said that "residents of the region will have access to the RT channel in the Serbian language, which will give a more complete overview of the modern world".

"Becoming part of the media space of the Balkans is a big challenge for us. We are ready for it," she said, according to RT.

The European Union has suspended the broadcasting of several Russian-backed media outlets, including RT, on March 1.

The European bloc has also sanctioned Margarita Simonyan, editor-in-chief of the English-language RT channel.

"Sputnik and Russia Today are under the direct or indirect control of the authorities of the Russian Federation and are important instruments for increasing support for military aggression against Ukraine, as well as for destabilizing neighboring states," said the head of EU diplomacy. of Josep Borrell on March 2.

The EU reacted in July after unofficial reports that Russia Today plans to open a TV station in Serbia.

Brussels said then that it expects Serbia to refrain from intensifying relations with Russia.

But the authorities in Serbia, despite calls from Brussels, refuse to respect the European sanctions.

Launched in 2005 as Russia Today, it is Russia's state media, which has been continuously expanding.

Currently there are channels in several languages including: English, French, Spanish and Arabic.

Despite operating on various platforms around the world, RT has faced major setbacks in recent months as major tech companies have blocked its channels due to Russia's unprovoked attack on Ukraine./REL
