A small passenger plane that crashed in western Alaska while en route to the city of Nome was found Friday in the frozen waters of the Arctic Ocean, with all 10 people on board dead, authorities said.

Mike Salerno, a spokesman for the United States Coast Guard, said rescue teams were conducting a helicopter search in the area where the plane was last located when they saw the wreckage.

The Bering Air plane with nine passengers and a pilot on board was traveling from the town of Unalakleet on Thursday afternoon, the Alaska Department of Public Safety announced.

The plane took off at 2:37 p.m. and officials lost contact with it less than an hour later, said David Olson, director of operations at Bering Air.

According to the National Meteorological Service, there was light snowfall and fog, with temperatures reaching as low as minus 8.3 Celsius.

The plane was operating at maximum passenger capacity. All 10 people on board were adults.

The plane's disappearance marks the third major air disaster in the United States in eight days. A passenger plane and a military helicopter collided near the nation's capital on January 29, killing 67 people. An ambulance plane crashed in Philadelphia on January 31, killing all six people on board and one person on the ground.
