Yevgeny Prigozhin's rebellion may be over, but the Kremlin now faces a "deeply unstable" situation, according to the Washington-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
The failed rebellion and "short-term reconciliation," in the form of an apparent truce with the Wagner Group, is likely to significantly damage Putin's government and Russia's efforts to invade Ukraine, ISW analysts write.
"The uprising exposed the weakness of Russian security forces and demonstrated Putin's inability to use his forces in time to repel an internal threat and further eroded his monopoly on force."
The authors also note that Wagner's warriors were, on several occasions, greeted warmly by residents in Rostov-on-Don.
