"Whoever walks the path of betrayal will be punished. I am not going to allow a civil war in Russia", Vladimir Putin made it clear through a speech in the early hours of the day that the rebellion of the Wagner mercenary group led by Yevgeny Prigozhin will not be passed easily.
Although he acknowledged the blockade of important facilities in the southern Russian city of Rostov, home to the Russian military's central headquarters for the war in Ukraine, Putin said the Russian military had been ordered to act against those who organized the armed uprising.
"Wagner's treacherous troops will be punished without delay. Their rebellion is a mortal threat to Russia. I will not allow a civil war in the country. Calls for insurrection are a stab in the back. Key actions will be taken to stabilize the situation in Rostov-on-Don."
Prigozhin has declared that he will march on Moscow if the top military leaders do not meet with him. Through an audio message, he appears to have responded to Putin, saying that his troops are not committing treason, but are "patriots" fighting for the future of the homeland.
According to CNN, the Russian president is facing the most serious threat so far in his 23 years in power. Everything he has fought for so far could collapse overnight, says the American media giant, according to which the next 24 hours will be decisive for Putin and the fate of Russia.
Ukrainian officials were quick to describe this situation as a sign of the "collapse of the Russian leader's regime". Volodymyr Zelensky himself said that this moment proves the weakness of Russia.
"Russia used propaganda to mask its weakness and the stupidity of its government. Now there is so much chaos there that no lie can hide it... Russia's weakness is obvious," Zelensky said.
Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, as well as the heads of regions annexed by Moscow in Ukraine, pledged to support the Kremlin chief, recalling how enemies in the West are profiting from this internal conflict. The head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill, also called for national unity and asked Wagner's female fighters to "consider this matter once more carefully". "When the enemies are doing everything in their power to destroy Russia, attempts to sow division in the country are the biggest crime, for which there is no excuse," he said.
The Russian army has been put on alert for war in the city of Voronezh, located between Rostov and Moscow, where, according to the BBC, Wagner's mercenaries are said to have also taken control of several military structures, while a fuel depot was set on fire.
Russia immediately increased security: the Internet was restricted while tanks were seen on the streets of Moscow. Prigozhin accused the Russian military of launching deadly attacks on his forces in Ukraine, where Wagner's troops are fighting alongside regular troops, but the Kremlin dismissed this as a "provocation".
