Turkey's main opposition party is leading in some of the country's biggest cities, including Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir in local elections.
The "occupation" of Istanbul towards failure, Erdogan is losing
Recep Tayyip Erdogan risks losing the biggest cities in the local elections held this Sunday in Turkey, at least these are the results made public by the local media as more than 50% of the votes have been counted.
In the main cities, Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Bursa, Adana, the candidates of the opposition party CHP lead. When 57% of the votes have been counted, Ekrem Imamoğlu is heading towards securing another mandate as the mayor of Istanbul. He leads with 50.19% of the votes, while his rival, Murat Kurum of AKP, has 41.15 of the votes.
This Sunday, the eyes of the whole world have turned to Istanbul, with the economic center of Turkey returning to be decisive in the political life of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
The Turkish leader carried the entire weight of the electoral campaign for the local elections on his back, channeling all the forces of the AKP in Istanbul, as it is not only a matter of honor to regain the largest municipality of the country, but also a confirmation of the role his hegemonic position in Turkey's political life.
But his government has not been able to solve the economic crisis that has been accompanied by an inflation rate of 67% and an interest rate of 50%.
If the AKP candidate for Istanbul Murat Kurum succeeds in defeating the incumbent mayor, Ekrem Imamoglu, then Erdogan neutralizes the strongest potential rival for the presidency from the opposition. By "conquering" Istanbul, he seals his political future, but also the course of Turkey in the coming years.
