Counterfeit money has continued to circulate in Kosovo, even though last year there was a decrease in their number compared to the previous year.

The authorities say that the most counterfeited banknote was the one of 100 euros, while among the coins, there are more fake 2 euros in circulation.

"In 2021, we had a total of 5,625 counterfeit banknotes, where the most counterfeited banknote was a 100 euro banknote, so 2,639 was the number of the banknote and it is verified that it was one of the most counterfeited banknotes, while as for the coins in in the same year, there were a total of 10 thousand 589, and from this number, the most counterfeited coin is the 2 euro coin, whose number is 9 thousand 991 pieces", said Feriz Selimaj, specialist of the Kosovo Agency for Forensics.

Selimaj shows some of the steps to dictate counterfeit money without the need to use devices.

"To touch with your hand whether the banknote is genuine or not, there are some features that can be felt through the hand, and check, we turn to normal light and the value of the banknote when viewed in the light creates the value of the banknote and the sign of Aquarius is visible in the light... Another feature is under infrared rays," added Selimaj.

According to police data, the most frequent cases of money counterfeiting are banks that have received counterfeit money through ATMs, but also from various supermarkets and gas stations.
