Chaos in Brazil, supporters of former president Bolsonaro attack key

A day of tension in Brazil, where thousands of protesters supporting former president Jair Bolsonaro have stormed the country's main government buildings, in a scene that closely resembles the attack on the Capitol in Washington on January 6, 2021.

The dynamics are different.

Bolsonaro's supporters have surrounded the buildings of the Parliament, the Supreme Court and the Presidency with their tents where they sleep since October 30, when the former right-wing president was defeated by Luiz Inacio Lula, who returned to that post after a 12-year absence, part of which was spent in prison on the charge of corruption.

President Lula is not in any of the buildings occupied by the protesters, while his rival Bolsonaro is, according to sources in the United States.

According to the statements of the Minister of Justice Falvio Dino, the staff located in the building are waiting for the intervention of the air forces to be transported from the roof of the buildings, while the armed forces are being added to the entire area.

According to Brazilian media, the intervention of special forces has enabled the regaining of control of the Supreme Court, but the Parliament remains occupied by demonstrators.
