French police prevent a planned terrorist attack during the Olympics

French security officials have uncovered a plot to carry out an attack during a soccer match at the Paris Olympics.

In a statement Friday, Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said French security forces this month arrested an 18-year-old Chechen national suspected of planning an attack on the Geoffroy Guichard stadium in the city of Saint-Etienne, "prompted by from the ideology of the Islamic State".

He wanted to "attack the fans, but also the security forces and die as a martyr", said Darmanin.

France is on the highest level of security alert ahead of the Olympics which start in less than two months.

According to the French News Agency, the Chechen citizen has been charged with terrorist plot and is in custody.

The Organizing Committee of the Paris Olympic Games said in a statement that it "praises the efficiency of the law enforcement agencies and their extraordinary mobilization to ensure the security of the Games."

The Paris Olympic Games will take place from July 26 to August 11./VOA
