Paul Pelosi, the husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, was the victim of a violent attack at the couple's home in San Francisco on Friday morning.

Referring to a source , the Associated Press news agency said that the person who attacked Mr. Pelosi was looking for the Democratic leader. Just before he hammered her, he had called out twice, "Where's Nancy." Mrs. Pelosi herself was not at home at the time of the attack.

In a press conference, San Francisco Police Chief William Scott said that an investigation is underway to determine the motives of this attack.

He identified the suspect as David Depape, who is now in custody.

The police arrested the perpetrator at the scene. The 42-year-old is charged with attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse and other charges.

82-year-old Paul Pelosi suffered severe head and body injuries, according to two people who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity, but did not provide other details about his health. He was admitted to Zuckerberg Hospital in San Francisco.

While the circumstances of the attack remain unclear, the incident has raised questions about the safety of members of Congress and their families. Threats to lawmakers are at their highest as it marks two years since the violent attack on the Capitol. The attack also comes just 11 days before the Congress elections. Crime and public safety have emerged as top concerns among Americans.
