The two drugs Quinapril and Hydrochlorothiazide have been withdrawn from the market due to the presence of nitrosamines, according to a notice posted on the Food and Drug Administration website.
The US Food and Drug Administration announced that Aurobindo Pharma is recalling Quinapril and Hydrochlorothiazide USP 20mg/12.5mg tablets numbers QE2021005-A and QE2021010-A, according to the New York Post.
The recall occurred due to the presence of nitrosamine, or N-nitroso-quinapril, a substance commonly found in water and foods, including grilled meats, dairy products and vegetables.
Everyone is exposed to some level of nitrosamines, the FDA said, but exposure to them above acceptable levels for long periods of time can increase the risk of cancer.
Quinapril and Hydrochlorothiazide tablets are used to treat hypertension.
Patients should contact their doctor if they should continue taking their medication or if they should consider an alternative treatment.
