Paraguay's civil aviation authority launched an investigation today into LATAM Airlines flight LA1325, whose captain was forced to make an emergency landing after seeing the plane's 'nose' disintegrate amid a strong storm.

The Airbus A320 belonging to the aforementioned Paraguay branch of the airline (LATAM Airlines Paraguay) encountered extreme weather late Wednesday evening while flying from Asuncion to Santiago, Chile.

Videos published on social networks show the terrifying moments for passengers as the plane shakes and lightning shoots out of the windows.

The plane returned to the Paraguayan capital and landed safely, with no injuries to passengers or crew members.

However, the images of the disintegrated 'nose' and cracks in the cockpit glass are shocking.

The head of Paraguay's civil aviation agency (DINAC) said the plane encountered an "unprecedented storm".

For its part, the airline stressed that "passengers and crew members are fine" and that the Airbus A320 was forced to make an emergency landing at around 11pm (local time) due to "extreme weather conditions".
