Greek Prime Minister: Ready to extend the hand of friendship to Turkey

Greece is ready to extend a hand of friendship to its neighbor and regional rival Turkey, the Greek prime minister said Thursday, even as he accused the Turkish president of stoking anti-Greek sentiment in his country.

Tensions have escalated between the two NATO allies, who are divided over a series of issues and have been on the brink of war three times in the past 50 years.

"I wish that, even if it is late, our neighbors choose the path of reducing tensions, law, coexistence in peace, without explosions of rhetoric and with constructive actions", said Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis after the meeting with German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, in Athens.

"From my side, they will have the willingness to extend the hand of friendship. We no longer have time for unnecessary reasons that incite tension," said Mr. Mitsotakis, adding that disputes should be resolved peacefully. "This is what our people want, what people in Greece want, what people in Turkey want, this is what all of Europe wants."

Disputes between Greece and Turkey include maritime boundaries in the Aegean and the eastern Mediterranean that affect oil and gas exploration rights. Turkey has also attacked Greece for its military presence in the eastern Greek islands, which it says is in violation of international treaties.

Greece counters by saying it is directly threatened by Turkey, which has a significant military presence on the Turkish coast in front of the islands and has reacted with dismay to statements by Turkish officials that have hinted that the sovereignty of some Greek-inhabited islands could be contested. .

"Partner countries in NATO cannot question the sovereignty of one or the other state", said Scholz in the joint conference with Mitsotakis after the meeting. "All issues must be resolved on the basis of dialogue and international law. We are very much in agreement on this".

Mitsotakis said that "it was really unfortunate that President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is following a dead end by poisoning his people with lies against Greece. Because our neighbors and allies know that the Greek islands are not a threat to anyone".

The German chancellor said that it was "in the interest of all the neighbors" to use all the economic potential of the Mediterranean. "During the talks, I got the impression that Greece is very willing to do this. We can and should believe this".
