This morning, after the end of the audiences, Pope Francis was admitted to the Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic for some necessary diagnostic examinations and to continue treatment for bronchitis in a hospital setting. The news was announced by the Holy See Press Office.
Bronchitis of the last few days
Since last week, Pope Francis, who turned 88 in December, has had a “severe cold” (as he said during the general audience on Wednesday, February 5) and has been staying at home for several days “due to bronchitis” (as the Holy See press office announced).
However, last Sunday, February 9, he wanted to lead the Mass in St. Peter's Square for the Jubilee of the Armed Forces, Police and Security Services. He began to read the text, but then left the reading to a colleague: "Excuse me, but I will ask the master to continue the reading due to breathing difficulties," he said. At the end of the Mass, he took the floor again to recite the Angelus prayer in full.
On Monday, during a private meeting, he told them, “I am sick, I have bronchitis and I cannot go out.” On Wednesday, during the general audience, he again left the reading of the catechism to a collaborator, saying, “I am asking the priest to continue the reading, because with my bronchitis I cannot yet... I hope I can next time.”
Increasing concerns and hospitalization
However, it seems that his condition has not improved. The Holy See's statement indicates a deterioration in the Pope's health, especially since no date has been specified for his release from the hospital. In this situation, it is highly unlikely that he will be able to go to Cinecittà next Monday for the artists' jubilee, as planned.
However, the Vatican statement suggests that the hospitalization was not an emergency, but a planned measure, as the Pope held regular meetings that day, including one with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico. The Holy See explained that the hospitalization is intended to “continue treatment of bronchitis in a hospital setting,” to ensure more careful monitoring and more effective treatment.
Winter health challenges
This situation has now become an annual occurrence with the arrival of winter. Last year, from late November until Easter, Pope Francis several times skipped reading the catechism, the Angelus, and Masses, due to recurring colds and bronchitis.
In late winter 2023, due to an inflammation of the bronchi, he suffered a sudden deterioration in his health and was urgently admitted to the Gemelli Hospital. He later confessed that it was “a severe and acute pneumonia in the lower part of the lungs.”
Since then, to prevent respiratory infections, the Pope, during the cold season, is under the supervision of a medical team and undergoes treatment with cortisone drugs.
