At the end of his visit to NATO, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said that the United States aims for a diplomatic and peaceful solution to the war in Ukraine that enables a lasting peace.

At a press conference at NATO headquarters in Brussels, Secretary Hegseth rejected criticism of Washington's negotiating strategy with Russia over the war in Ukraine and warned Europe not to exploit the United States by making it responsible for its defense.

He said that European allies must take primary responsibility for defending Europe and that the United States is not betraying Europe.

In his response, Pete Hegseth said that Europe must be responsible for its own fate in the face of Putin's military machine.

"When it comes to defense spending, even 2% of GDP is not enough. Three and four and, ultimately, as the president has said, 5% of defense spending is critical, a realization as there is a Russian war machine that is intent on taking more and more land in Ukraine. And standing against that is an important course for the United States, just as it has been an important time for the United States."

My role as a representative of the United States is to speak realistically about the course of that conflict. And I think you saw that yesterday from President Trump, who himself is the best negotiator on the planet, bringing the two sides together to find a negotiated peace. There is no betrayal here.

"There is a recognition that the whole world and the United States are invested and interested in peace, a negotiated peace, as Trump has said, stopping the killing. And so that will require both sides to recognize the things they don't want. That's why I think the world is fortunate at this moment, the powers that be will bring peace and that's a welcome sign," the secretary said.

Hegseth also defended comments made the day before about Ukraine's borders, saying they are not concessions to Russia, but merely recognition of the reality on the ground.

A day earlier, Secretary Hegseth said that Ukraine's membership in NATO is not realistic and suggested that Kiev should give up hopes of returning all of its territory from Russia and instead prepare for a negotiated peace agreement, the implementation of which would be supported by international forces.

Secretary Hegseth also stated that it is fair to say that future funding for Ukraine will be part of the negotiations.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said it was important that Russian President Vladimir Putin understood that the West was "united" as talks began to end the war in Ukraine.

"Of course, I don't know what exactly President Putin is thinking," Rutte said. "He is a strong negotiator, he is very unpredictable, but in the end if we want a peaceful agreement then we need him there."

He added that Ukraine will be included in any form in a peace agreement.

Secretary Rutte also said that leaders had never promised Ukraine that it would become a member of NATO if it reached a peace agreement with Russia.

"We need to make sure that Vladimir Putin never tries to attack Ukraine again, that is essential... but Ukraine was never promised that part of the peace agreement would be part of NATO," Secretary Rutte declared.
