US President Donald Trump has dominated the final hours of the NATO Summit in Ankara, with various statements that ranged from harsh criticism of allies to messages of unity within the Alliance.

During the two-day summit, Trump initially expressed dissatisfaction with some member countries over defense spending and a lack of support for the United States during operations against Iran. He also criticized some European countries for their positions and reiterated concerns over the Greenland issue.

However, in the closed-door meeting with 32 NATO leaders, the US president struck a more moderate tone, emphasizing that the US wants to stand by its allies.

"We want to stand with you," Trump reportedly said during the meeting.

After the discussions concluded, he described the summit as a success and said that there had been “a lot of love and unity” in the hall. According to him, one of the main messages of the meeting was the unity of the member countries.

One of the most important developments of the summit was the reaffirmation of the commitment to Article 5 of the NATO Treaty, which stipulates that an attack on one member country is considered an attack on the entire Alliance.

Trump also held a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, where support for Ukraine was discussed. The possibility of licensing the production of Patriot air defense missiles for Ukraine was also mentioned during the meeting.

Despite his messages of unity, Trump's statements at the summit revived concerns in Europe about the impact of his political style on the stability of the Alliance. European leaders have previously expressed concerns that public criticism of allies could weaken NATO's common message.

The Ankara summit ended with a joint statement by the leaders, who reaffirmed their commitment to the collective defense and security of the Alliance.

New defense contracts worth over $50 billion were also announced during the meeting. (The Guardian )
