Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said her country is ready to defend "every inch" of its territory after US President Donald Trump renewed his claims to take control of Greenland.

Speaking from the NATO Summit in Ankara, Frederiksen reiterated that Greenland is not for sale and stressed that Denmark's sovereignty is not in question.

"We will defend the Kingdom of Denmark. We are ready to defend every inch of NATO, including our territory," she declared.

Earlier in the day, Trump said that Greenland remains an issue of strategic importance to the United States.

"Greenland is a big problem for us. We need it for the defense of the world, not just the United States. It's very important. This doesn't help Denmark," the US president said.

Frederiksen responded to Trump's statements by emphasizing that "we are a sovereign state and we expect everyone to respect our territorial integrity and our sovereignty."

She added that Article 5 of the NATO Treaty, which guarantees the collective defense of member countries, remains the greatest security guarantee for Denmark.

Relations between Washington and Copenhagen have been tense since Trump returned to the White House, following his statements about taking control of Greenland, an autonomous territory under Danish sovereignty.
