United States President Donald Trump has assured NATO leaders that Washington wants to remain part of the Alliance, during a closed-door meeting held at the Ankara Summit.

According to a source familiar with the discussions, Trump told his counterparts: "We want to stay with you."

The source, quoted by Reuters, also announced that the US president stated that the United States is ready to continue selling weapons to allied countries, regardless of how they will be used.

According to the same source, during the meeting Trump did not repeat criticism of Spain for its level of military spending, nor did he talk about Greenland, an issue that has caused tensions within the Alliance in recent months.

He also did not mention previous statements about the end of the temporary ceasefire with Iran.

Trump's statements come at a time when the NATO summit is focused on increasing defense investment and strengthening cooperation between allied countries.
