In Germany, more people than ever before will be victims of domestic violence in 2024, according to a report published on Saturday.
A total of 256,942 people have been affected by domestic violence, an increase of 3.7 percent, compared to the previous year, the German daily Welt am Sonntag reported, based on figures from the Federal Police Office.
However, not all cases have been reported, so the exact number is even higher, according to experts. The Social Association of Germany has said that the latest figures are worrying.
"Domestic violence mainly means violence against women, which makes the help-seeking centers even more important," said the association's president, Michaela Engelmeier.
Domestic violence is a reference to the involvement in violence of persons who are, or have been, in a relationship, or when the violence occurred within the family, or if there are family ties.
According to statistics, the number of women who have been affected by some form of violence is increasing. The data also shows that domestic violence has increased by 14 percent in the last five years.
The Ministry of Family Affairs has told the newspaper that the increase in the number of cases of domestic violence can be attributed to "an increase in social crises, but also personal challenges".
"However, it is possible that the willingness to report these incidents has increased," the ministry said.
In February this year, lawmakers passed a law on better protection of victims. The law requires the provision of necessary services for victims, for protection and counselling. In order to act in accordance with the law, the Government will pay a total of 2.6 billion euros in the period 2027-2036 for the requirements of the states.
Many organizations complain that victims of domestic violence have little support and that shelters do not have the necessary capacities to deal with them./REL
