A coup attempt was made against Ali Khamenei in January.

Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, is suspected of having been the target of a coup attempt within the power structures themselves, shortly before the outbreak of the harsh crackdown on protests on the nights of January 8 and 9, when unrest in the country reached its peak.

According to Iranian sources interviewed by the French daily Le Figaro, the attempt took place on the evening of January 7 and was led by former President Hassan Rouhani, in collaboration with figures from his previous government, including former Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, as well as clerics from the Qom region and people close to the Revolutionary Guard (IRGC).

A source quoted by the newspaper stated that the aim of the initiative was to remove Khamenei from the decision-making process during the protest crisis. However, the attempt failed after it did not receive the support of Ali Larijani, who was appointed in August as Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, according to a report by Le Figaro.

The report adds that President Masoud Pezeshkian was not made aware of the plan, to avoid exposing it. After the attempt was discovered, Rouhani and Zarif were reportedly placed under house arrest for several days, while reformist figures close to them were temporarily detained.

The information comes at a time when Iranian officials have confirmed to The New York Times that Larijani was tasked more than a month ago with running the country in case something were to happen to Khamenei.

Since then, according to reports, the 67-year-old Larijani has taken on a central role in managing state affairs.

Iranian authorities have not yet given an official response to these claims.
