The White House confirmed that the United States provided intelligence support to the Mexican government in the operation that led to the elimination of the leader of the notorious Jalisco Nueva Generacion cartel.

Donald Trump's spokeswoman, Caroline Leavitt, wrote on the X platform that "the US assisted in the operation that targeted drug lord Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes or "El Mencho".

Leavitt said that "El Mencho" was a "prime target" for both Mexico and the US as one of the main traffickers of fentanyl in the US, while recalling that President Trump declared the CJNG a foreign terrorist organization last year.

"In this operation, three other cartel members were killed, three were wounded and two were arrested," she added. Leavitt commended the Mexican military for its cooperation and successful execution of the operation.

Earlier, US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau welcomed the operation, calling it a "great development" for Mexico, the US and the rest of Latin America.

A wave of violence swept the country after news of the killing of its most wanted drug lord. The BBC reports on a series of incidents involving gunmen on the streets of Jalisco and other areas of Mexico, while eyewitnesses filmed plumes of smoke rising over several cities, including Guadalajara, host of the upcoming FIFA World Cup.

Pablo Lemus Navarro, the governor of Jalisco, declared a code red there, cutting off public transport and cancelling mass events and school classes. Tourists who spoke to Reuters described the coastal city of Puerto Vallarta as a “war zone.”/TCH
