The White House has reacted for the first time after the incident that occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning at President Donald Trump's resort in Florida, where security forces shot and killed an armed man.

White House spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt stated:

"In the middle of the night, while most Americans were asleep, the United States Secret Service acted swiftly and decisively to neutralize a madman, armed with a gun and a can of gasoline, who entered President Trump's home."

How did the incident happen?

According to the United States Secret Service, the boy was spotted near the north gate of the Mar-a-Lago property, carrying what appeared to be a shotgun and a fuel can. President Trump was not at the resort at the time of the incident, as he was in Washington.

Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said the young man was in his 20s and from North Carolina. His family had reported him missing several days earlier.

Investigators suspect he had left North Carolina for the south of the country, where he had purchased a shotgun along the way.

The gun holster was found in his vehicle. According to authorities, he managed to get through the north gate of Mar-a-Lago just as another vehicle was exiting the property.

The incident, including the young man's background, actions and possible motive, is being investigated by the FBI, Secret Service and Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office.
