When Marie Clare Tully gave birth to her son Hector prematurely at just 23 weeks, doctors estimated the baby probably only had a day to live. They advised the mother to say goodbye because she had very little chance of survival.

But Hector defied the odds and Marie Claire's 'miracle baby' has now celebrated his first birthday. The last 12 months have not been easy, but his mother says it has been the happiest time of her life. The miracle happened in Scotland.

Hector spent 259 nights of his life in the hospital after being born with severe complications due to prematurity.

Due to hydrocephalus, the spinal fluid cannot circulate, while also suffering from a brain hematoma. He also suffers from chronic lung disease, retinopathy and sleep apnea.

"His case is unique in that he has additional complications due to his premature birth," Marie told the BBC.
