Johnson's strong statement: Germany and France wanted the war to end with

Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has spoken about the war in Ukraine.

In comments likely to cause uproar among European leaders, Boris Johnson told CNN Portugal:

"This was a huge shock, we could see the Russian battalion tactical groups coming together, but different countries had very different perspectives. The German view was at one stage that if it happened, that would be a disaster , then it would be better if the whole thing were finished quickly and Ukraine was flooded".

Johnson said there were "all sorts of sound economic reasons" for the approach, but that he "couldn't support" it.

He also commented on French President Emmanuel Macron, who has led Europe's effort to contain Vladimir Putin through diplomatic talks.

"You must have no doubt that the French were in denial until the last moment," Johnson said.

The former prime minister, who was seen as a close ally of Volodymyr Zelensky, pointed out that EU nations later rallied behind Kiev.
