Suspicious persons emerge from manholes

New York City police have launched an investigation into an unusual phenomenon that is worrying authorities and residents: groups of people appearing to emerge from sewer manholes in various areas of the city during the night.

The case has gained attention after several videos were published on social media, showing individuals emerging from the sewer system and then disappearing without a trace.

In a statement to the media, the New York Police Department announced that special emergency units have conducted detailed checks on the sewer network to verify whether there is any danger to the public.

"Our officers logged into the system to ensure nothing suspicious or dangerous had been left behind, but nothing was found," the statement said.

The Department of Environmental Protection, which manages the city's sewers, also confirmed that no damage to the infrastructure has been found.

According to a senior law enforcement official, one of the leads being investigated is that these people may be looking for valuables that end up in the sewage system.

Reported cases

The first incident was reported last Thursday around 11 p.m. in the Gravesend area of ??Brooklyn, where a witness saw eight people opening a manhole and climbing inside. They were seen again about three hours later, emerging from the sewers and changing clothes near parked cars.

Just two hours later, another group was reported in Williamsburg, also in Brooklyn. According to authorities, the people emerged from the manhole after more than two and a half hours and drove away.

A video posted online shows seven people emerging from the manhole, while the last one carefully closes the lid behind them.

A similar incident was reported on May 5 in Astoria, Queens, where residents saw several people entering the sewers in the early hours of the morning.

One witness described the scene as "movie-worthy", saying the people "entered the well like 'Ninja Turtles'".

Still no answer

Despite investigations, authorities have not yet confirmed whether these cases are related or whether they are organized activities.

Meanwhile, the mystery of the "sewer people" continues to remain unsolved, raising questions about what really happens beneath the streets of one of the world's largest cities.
