US may deploy nuclear weapons in other NATO countries

The United States is considering the possibility of deploying nuclear weapons in other European NATO countries, according to a report published by the Financial Times and cited by several informed sources.

This move is seen as part of Washington's efforts to strengthen security guarantees to European allies, at a time when the US is pushing to partially reduce its commitment to conventional defense.

According to the report, discussions include the possibility of expanding the nuclear presence beyond the six current NATO countries that already have US nuclear weapons deployed under the “nuclear sharing” program. These countries are Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Turkey and the United Kingdom. In this system, the weapons remain under US control and their use is authorized only by Washington.

Sources cited by British media say that such an expansion would have the main purpose of sending a clear signal to Moscow and NATO allies that the American nuclear umbrella in Europe remains strong, even if European countries increase their responsibility for conventional defense.

Possible locations for additional deployment could be NATO's eastern flank states, including Poland and the Baltic states.

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte recently stressed that there is a consensus within the alliance that, despite changes in the US strategic focus towards other regions, the defense of Europe must remain unchanged. He also underlined that any attack on NATO will receive a “devastating” response.

Meanwhile, in a parallel diplomatic development, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio sent a congratulatory message to Italy on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the Republic. In this message, he described Italy as a reliable partner and friend of the US, praising the increase in Italian investments in the field of defense and the commitment of the government of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz and stability in the Middle East.

Rubio also stressed Italy's support for international efforts to end the war between Russia and Ukraine. He also expressed gratitude for the presence of about 30,000 American military personnel and their families on Italian territory.

Against the backdrop of these developments, tensions between the West and Russia remain high, while NATO is facing debates over balancing defense spending and nuclear deterrence strategy in Europe.
