How the Iranian Army Uses ChatGPT

A Financial Times report sheds light on how actors linked to the Iranian military apparatus are using Artificial Intelligence models developed in the West, including ChatGPT and Gemini, to bolster their cyber operations.

According to cybersecurity experts and technology companies cited in the report, the use of these tools has significantly increased the ability of Iran-linked groups to develop malware, create phishing campaigns in precise languages ??such as Hebrew and Arabic, and carry out large-scale attacks.

Analysts say AI has been integrated into every stage of the cyberattack process, from searching for vulnerabilities in the internet to creating fake identities that are used to deceive targets in the United States and Israel.

According to one security analyst, these tools have "absolutely helped elevate their capabilities," making operations faster, more automated, and more compelling.

The report highlights that actors linked to Iranian Intelligence have used AI models to build fake online personas and develop long-term communications with targets, increasing the credibility of phishing attacks.

Cybersecurity companies, including OpenAI and Google, have said they are taking steps to limit abuse of their platforms, by shutting down accounts and imposing usage limits. However, they acknowledge that state actors often find new ways to circumvent restrictions.

According to the report, Iran's use of AI is not limited to cyber. Studies and analysis of military documents suggest that AI is also being explored in electromagnetic warfare, drone guidance, target analysis, and accelerating battlefield decision-making.

Experts estimate that Iran has managed to advance in part thanks to access to open technology and translation tools, which have made it easier to study Western military research, despite international sanctions.

However, its capabilities still remain below the level of major military powers, while some analysts point out that many of the uses of AI in military operations remain difficult to verify from the outside.

The report concludes that the integration of artificial intelligence into Iranian military structures is part of a broader modernization strategy, which aims to compensate for the economic and technological limitations caused by sanctions, making AI an increasingly central element in modern digital warfare.
