A dramatic situation that lasted over 15 hours in downtown Bakersfield, California, ended on Wednesday with the elimination of the hostage-taker and the rescue of all hostages.

The standoff began Tuesday afternoon, around 1 p.m., when authorities received a call about a bomb threat at the four-story Chase Bank building. 41-year-old Anthony Scott Searles-Harris, who turned out to be a registered sex offender with a history of violence, barricaded himself inside the building, holding 10 people hostage.

Rescue operation

The Bakersfield Police Department, in collaboration with the crisis negotiation team, was able to maintain telephone communication with the perpetrator throughout the night. As a result of the negotiations, two of the hostages were released on Tuesday evening.

The situation escalated in the early hours of Wednesday morning. At around 4:20 a.m., FBI agents intervened, fatally shooting 41-year-old Searles-Harris. After the intervention, police confirmed that the other 10 hostages still inside the building were found unharmed.

Security measures

During the hours of the hostage-taking, the area surrounding the building, including City Hall and police headquarters, was completely evacuated, while citizens were warned to stay away from the security perimeter. Eyewitnesses, such as broadcaster Jacob Davidson, described the presence of law enforcement as “the largest ever seen in this city.”

Federal and local authorities are continuing investigations to uncover the exact motives for this threat and serious incident, which fortunately ended without civilian casualties.
