Secretary of State Marco Rubio has assessed that at this stage, NATO expansion, more specifically Kosovo's admission to the North Atlantic Alliance, is not an issue that can happen soon.

During a hearing in Congress where Rubio was present, the chairman of the Subcommittee on Europe, Congressman Keith Self, emphasized that there are four NATO member states that are blocking Kosovo's membership in NATO, thus requesting Rubio's help in pushing forward the issue of Kosovo's membership in this international organization.

At this point, Rubio emphasized that NATO is focused on other more important topics and that Kosovo's membership in NATO "is not really at the top of the agenda," something he concluded after conversations with several NATO member states.

"But that doesn't mean it will never happen, it just means it's not a priority given these other points of tension. This issue has not been highlighted in recent conversations with our NATO allies," he said.
