France is going crazy over pictures of President Emmanuel Macron, wearing boxing gloves, training in the gym, his gaze fixed on the bag and his face and muscles tight from the effort.

The black-and-white footage released on the Instagram profile of Soazig de la Moissonnière, the president's official photographer, continues to spark reactions across the country, including positive comments, bewilderment and teasing.

Social media users soon started comparing him to Rocky Balboa. Others say the Elysée boss is preparing to take on President Vladimir Putin, who is no stranger to photo shoots in which he has often shown off his athletic prowess. Putin has previously been photographed fishing and defeating his opponents in judo.

According to his wife, Brigitte, the French president is a regular visitor to the boxing club.

"He goes there twice a week", she declared, in an interview published in "Paris Match" on November 16, 2023.

Macron had already appeared in boxing gear last January 8 in a short video published on his profile, 200 days before the start of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

For historian Eric Anceau, professor of contemporary history at the Université de Lorraine, those photos are an indication of the "neo-populist machismo staged today by several leaders starting with a master of the genre, Vladimir Putin."

In France, photos of Macron wearing gloves follow those of former health minister and former government spokesman Olivier Véran, who spoke about his new life as an MP and doctor to Le Figaro newspaper.

Former Prime Minister Edouard Philippe is also a big fan of the ring.

"Boxing is quite compatible with the exercise of state power", analyzes political communication expert, Philippe Moreau-Chevrolet, quoted by "France Presse".

"It is a violent sport, but with rules, like politics. Also the very theatrical image, as often happens with Macron, of the hero who overcomes suffering", he adds.

For Moreau-Chevrolet, Macron is "a technocrat trying the populist style, trying to answer Putin on his soil".

In this line is also the British newspaper Daily Mail, which writes that Macron is appearing more and more as the strong man of Europe who opposes Putin.

The photos come after repeated warnings from Macron, who has said that sending troops to Ukraine should not be "ruled out" and urged European leaders not to be "cowards" when it comes to Ukraine's defense.
