Alert in Seoul due to the wave of balloons released overnight by North Korea. "Suspicious objects are falling on our territory, be careful, don't approach, don't touch them," South Korea's Ministry of the Interior warned in a message to the population. Defense sent bomb squads and chemical and bacteriological defense experts to verify the contents. Surprise: the balloons did not carry explosives or radioactive materials, but garbage bags.

A huge amount of waste, because the North Koreans sent at least 150 balloons, which spread across eight of South Korea's nine provinces. Searching and collecting turned out to be more of a job for garbage collectors than for soldiers. The bags contained trash, plastic bottles, used batteries, and feces. To ensure the offending message was well understood, labels with the words "Excrement" were affixed to the bags on the most objectionable bags.

So far, about 150 balloons full of debris have been found, some of which have flown hundreds of kilometers. According to the authorities, in the late afternoon local time, several dozen were still flying, writes Corriere Della Sera.

The alert remains in effect, military recovery teams are checking the countryside and residential areas where the balloons were reported. Some fell by the wayside in the Seoul area, others reached much further south, as far as Gyeongsang Province.

The South Korean government called the act "vulgar as well as dangerous". On Sunday, the North's Defense Ministry had promised to "exercise strong self-defense action" in response to a round of military exercises conducted by the South's Air Force. Calling the opposing planes "dirty objects," the statement threatened to "bury the South in the trash." It was not a metaphorical phrase. A balloon war has been fought between the two Koreas for decades.
