A woman in northern France will stand trial on charges of insulting President Emmanuel Macron after she called him "garbage" in a Facebook post. The woman risks a fine of 12,000 euros, but not imprisonment, if she is convicted in the trial to be held in June.
Valerie, 50, was arrested on Friday and taken into custody after the state's local administrative agency filed a complaint about her Facebook post, the prosecutor of the northern city of Saint Omer, Mehdi Benbouzid, told AFP.
The complaint centered on a post on her Facebook page made on March 21, a day before Macron gave a lunchtime interview on the TF1 channel to defend his controversial pension reforms that have sparked nationwide protests.
"This trash will talk to you at 1:00 p.m....we always see this trash on TV," wrote Valeria.
According to france24.com, the woman, 50, was a supporter of the 2018-2019 "yellow vest" protests that rocked Macron during his first term. She is accused of "insulting the president of the Republic" and will be judged on June 20 in Saint-Omer, the prosecutor said.
"They want me to be an example," the woman told regional newspaper La Voix du Nord, which first reported the allegations.
The woman, named by the paper as Valerie, said she was stunned when she answered a knock on the door on Friday morning to find that police had come to arrest her.
"I asked them if it was a joke, I had never been arrested," she said.
The months-long protest movement against the pension reform has caused social tension in France, and Macron and his government are refusing to back down.
