Sweden has to wait until October to become a member of the largest military alliance in the world, NATO.

This was announced by the President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who stated that his country will not ratify Sweden's candidacy until October of this year.

Erdogan's statement comes just a day after NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg gave the good news from the Vilnius summit that Turkey has agreed not to blockade Sweden.

However, Erdogan has found another excuse. Speaking to journalists, he said that the Parliament of Turkey is on break for two months and then "there are many (other) legislative proposals to discuss".

Turkey opposes membership, claiming that Sweden harbors members of militant groups that Ankara considers terrorist.

But Turkey is not the only country that has postponed the ratification of the Swedish candidacy until autumn. Hungary has also announced such a thing.
