The Court of Appeal in The Hague has rejected the request of the former president of Kosovo, Hashim Thaçi, to be released from the Hague cell where he has been in custody since November 5, 2020.
Thaçi appealed the decision of the judge for the preliminary procedure in which the continuation of detention was ordered. The news was announced through the website of the Specialized Chambers.
In its explanation, the Chamber emphasizes that the reasons for his detention still stand, and there is a risk of escape, a suspicion that he may interfere with the proceedings and a risk of committing further crimes.
On April 29, the specialized prosecution presented an amended indictment against Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Rexhep Selim and Jakup Krasniqi, in which they claim to have committed war crimes in Gjilan, Budakovë and Semetish. They have been banned in The Hague since November 2020.
In support of the former leaders of the KLA, the government of Albania has come out, which, based on the resolution of the parliament, has considered these accusations, which were formulated in 2011 in the Council of Europe by Dick Marty, unfounded.
In the second week of October, Prime Minister Rama himself is expected to travel to Strasbourg, who will ask the Council of Europe to guarantee a new report that Marty's accusations are considered without facts from the investigations so far.
