A general strike in Israel halted work at banks, public transport, hospitals, shops and the country's main airport, as Israel's largest union stepped up efforts to pressure the government to reach a ceasefire deal with Hamas, one day after six more hostages were found dead in Gaza.

Arnon Bar-David, head of the Histadrut trade union, said on Sunday that reaching an agreement on the release of hostages held by Hamas in Gaza "is the most important issue".

"Until now we have shown a lot of responsibility and it has not been easy", said Mr. Bar-David. "But I think we cannot sit idly by. We cannot ignore the cries of our children who are being killed in the tunnels in Gaza; it is unimaginable..."

The hostages were apparently shot dead by militants as Israeli troops approached their location in Gaza. Israel's Foreign Ministry said early Monday that a forensic examination showed the hostages were killed by gunfire at close range 48-72 hours before the examination.

Monday's strike followed Sunday night protests in which tens of thousands of people demanded that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu agree to a ceasefire.

Thousands of people gathered outside Prime Minister Netanyahu's office in Jerusalem. In Tel Aviv, relatives of the hostages paraded with coffins to symbolize the death toll.

The protest appeared to be the largest in nearly 11 months of war.

Earlier on Sunday, Prime Minister Netanyahu vowed to intensify the fight with Hamas after the Israeli military found the bodies of the dead hostages.

"Those who kill the hostages don't want a deal" on a ceasefire in Gaza, Prime Minister Netanyahu said in a statement, telling Hamas leaders, "we will hunt you down, we will capture you and settle the score ".

He also accused Hamas of carrying out a gun attack earlier Sunday that killed three police officers near the Israeli-occupied West Bank city of Hebron. Hamas called it a "heroic resistance operation", for which the Al AQassam Brigades claimed responsibility.

Israel says it believes 101 Israeli and foreign hostages remain in Gaza, but about a third are believed to be dead, while the fate of the rest is unknown.

Senior Hamas officials said Israel, with its refusal to sign a ceasefire agreement, is responsible for the latest deaths.

The Hostage Families Forum called on Prime Minister Netanyahu to take responsibility and explain what was standing in the way of a deal.
