Greece has decided to transfer an unknown number of Patriot missile systems to the Hellenic and NATO Navy base on the island of Crete, in the Gulf of Suda, to protect American targets in the region, according to the Greek newspaper Kathimerini.

Patriots are a surface-to-air guided missile system capable of destroying both aircraft and ballistic missiles, and they are considered one of the most important air defense equipment.

According to Kathimerini, US military activity in the Middle East has increased while tensions have risen in recent days between Iran and Israel.

US President Donald Trump is said to have not yet decided whether to join the war, but that he has previously approved plans to attack Iran.
