Beer Sheba, the main hospital in southern Israel, Soroka Medical Center, has been hit by an Iranian missile during a new wave of ballistic attacks.

A hospital spokesman confirmed that the attack caused extensive damage to several of the complex's buildings and left dozens of people injured.

In an official statement, hospital leaders have called on citizens not to visit Soroka's facilities, due to the risk of ongoing attacks and extensive damage to infrastructure.

"The hospital has suffered significant damage in several of its sectors. We are currently operating only at emergency capacity," the institution said in a statement.

Soroka Medical Center, located in the city of Be'er Sheva, provides health services to about 1 million residents of the southern region of Israel and has over 1,000 beds, according to its official website.

Attack linked to nuclear tensions
According to Iranian state television, the attack on the hospital and other sites in Israel came in response to the Israeli bombing of the water reactor in Arak, Iran. Iranian authorities stated that there was no radiation risk from the strike on the reactor.

Iran has fired about 20 ballistic missiles at Israel, including one that hit the Soroka hospital. Several other areas around Beersheba have also been damaged.
