The US emissary for the Western Balkans, Gabriel Escobar, has said that the agreement reached, especially the one in Ohrid, is a very good opportunity for Kosovo and Serbia to establish good relations between themselves and open the doors for integration.
According to him, the agreement obliges Serbia to recognize the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Kosovo and its documents. For the part of Kosovo, he said that the obligation is the formation of the Association.
"Both countries should start the process of implementing the agreement. They should move as soon as possible so that we can make progress for both countries this year," he said.
Escobar said that no sanctions have been imposed on Kosovo, but measures have been taken.
Escobar has said that they want to see more commitment from Kosovo for the fulfillment of the EU's three-point plan for the extension of the situation in the north.
"The USA and the EU have made a three-point plan for de-escalating the situation and then returning to dialogue. These are the conditions. We have received confirmation from Serbia that it will pull the protesters in front of the municipal buildings in the north and participate in the elections. We have not received full commitment from Kosovo, but we agree with Kosovo on many democratic standards that they want to apply.
We also agree with Kosovo that those who attack journalists and KFOR should be punished, but we still expect to see convergence on the EU relief plan. We will work with the Government of Kosovo to convince them that it is in their interest to work with the US, the UK, NATO, the EU, QUINT, North Macedonia and Albania, which is also part of the process", he said.
