Turkish President Erdogan vowed to continue rescue and recovery efforts more than a week after a powerful earthquake struck his country and neighboring Syria.

"We will continue our work until we remove the last citizen who remains under the collapsed buildings," Erdogan said.

Damage assessment of the buildings, of which tens of thousands were destroyed, will be completed within a week and reconstruction will begin within months.

"We will rebuild all houses and workplaces, destroyed or uninhabitable by the earthquake and hand them over to their rightful owners," the Turkish president added.

The earthquake killed over 40,000 people, more than 105,000 people were injured and more than 13,000 are still being treated in hospital.
