Ecuador's youngest mayor, Brigitte Garcia, and a councilman, were found shot dead inside a car on Sunday.

The bodies of the 27-year-old mayor of San Vicente and her councillor, Jairo Loor, were found in manabi province shot by gunfire,

Garcia belonged to former President Rafael Correa's Civic Revolution Party. The latter in a social media post and Luisa Gonzalez, the party's presidential candidate in the last election, called Garcia's killing an assassination an assassination.

"I just learned that they had killed our mayor of San Vicente, Brigitte Garcia. I have no words, it's shocking, nobody is safe in Ecuador.

Ecuador has been engulfed by a wave of violence, which authorities blame on drug trafficking. President Daniel Noboa declared a state of emergency in January, amid a surge in violence as armed individuals took control of a television station while on live broadcast.
